Why Strokes Gained beats fairways, greens and putts

The old stats tell you what happened. Strokes Gained tells you what it cost you — and what to practise next.

The problem with the old stats

Fairways hit, greens in regulation and total putts have been on scorecards forever. The trouble is they treat every shot as equal, and golf shots are not equal.

A 3-foot putt counts the same as a 40-foot putt. A drive that misses the fairway by one yard counts the same as one hit out of bounds. Hit every fairway but leave every approach 60 feet from the hole, and the old stats say you played great — while your scorecard says otherwise.

How Strokes Gained works

Every position on a golf course has an expected score — how many shots a benchmark golfer takes to hole out from there. A 160-yard shot from the fairway might be 'worth' 2.8 expected shots; an 8-foot putt about 1.5.

When you hit a shot, we compare where you started with where you finished. Hit that 160-yard shot to 8 feet and you gained about 0.3 shots on the benchmark. Knock it in a bunker and you lost some. Add up every shot and you get your Strokes Gained for the round.

Positive numbers mean you beat the benchmark. Negative numbers mean you gave shots back. Simple as that.

Why it helps you improve faster

Because every shot is measured against the same ruler, the app can split your round into four parts: Off the Tee, Approach, Around the Green and Putting. Now you can see exactly which part of your game is costing you the most — not guessing from a putt count.

Two golfers can both shoot 85. One loses most of their shots off the tee, the other three-putts all day. The old stats can't tell them apart. Strokes Gained can — and that means your next practice session targets the thing that actually lowers your score.

What the numbers mean for you

Your dashboard shows Strokes Gained per 18 holes, so a 9-hole round and an 18-hole round can be compared fairly. The benchmark is a historical PGA TOUR baseline data set — a tough ruler — so don't be discouraged by negative numbers. What matters is your trend over time.

PGA Stats AI is not affiliated with the PGA TOUR, and Strokes Gained is a measuring tool, not a promise of improvement. But measure the right thing, practise the right thing, and the scores follow.
